If you’ve never been hiking in Yosemite before and are planning to visit the park then you’re likely to see something like this. In areas where there’s a lot of granite the trails are often marked with rocks. It’s a great low impact way to mark the trail.

When hiking along any trail you will always need to look for trail markers. A lot of trails over rocks are not as dramatically marked as in that picture. Sometimes you will just see a stack of rocks put on top of each other. This is done a lot in the Canyonlands where there is a lot of rocks that you may have to go over. Always if you are unsure of the trail, make sure you have a topographical map of the area and a compass.
