1 Bear Dead, 1 Injured Due to Motorists

Bears are a rare sight in Yosemite even for frequent visitors and that makes their needless death even more tragic. This week two bears were hit by vehicles this week, one died from its injuries. Please slow down and obey speed limits. The park speed limit is 35 if you don’t see a sign with a reduced speed limit of 25 in construction zones. Look for wildlife on the sides of the roads when driving. Yosemite animals don’t normally “just jump out” in front of your car.

Everywhere you see a sign with the red bear on it marks the location a bear has been killed by an automobile.

More Bear Activity
The Pines campgrounds and concession areas, such as Housekeeping and Curry Village, had an increase in bear activity this week. A sow has been taking her cubs into developed areas and getting food out of lockers that are not properly latched. If you are planning on camping in Yosemite, make sure you know how your locker operates and latch it properly every time you open and close it.

Do you have bear sightings or incidents? Please call the save-a-bear hotline and leave a message (209) 372-0322.

Good advice. 17 bears were hit in 2008. Many on the “Toulunme Autobahn.” Give them a brake! The speed limits are as posted, but while 35 mph is the general rule, it’s 25 mph in the Valley proper.

Yes! Great advice! What is the hurry anyway? You save fuel and lessen emissions. It’s better for the environment, habitat, and your blood pressure. Relax and enjoy the journey!
